Beginner lessons
Easy drawings for kids
The simplest lessons on the site, all ten steps or fewer, the place to start with a beginner or a wriggly five-year-old.
“Easy” here means something specific: fewer steps, bigger shapes and nothing fiddly. Every lesson on this page is ten steps or fewer, starts with one big shape (a circle, an oval, a box) and adds one or two lines per step. That is about five minutes of drawing, which is the right length for a first go.
If these go well, the next step up is the full animals (eleven to thirteen steps) on the cute and animal pages.

A head, two ears, two eyes and a nose. The gentlest start there is.

- Draw the first shape light and big, at least the size of your hand. Small, dark first lines are the most common reason a drawing goes wrong.
- Only draw the red. Each step shows exactly one new thing in red; copy that and ignore the rest until the next step.
- Rub out the dashed guide lines last, not as you go. They are what keep everything in proportion.
