Drawing ideas for 7 year olds
Drawing ideas for seven-year-olds: animals in poses, sea creatures, space, food and the first characters, twelve to thirteen steps with a bit more detail.
Seven-year-olds draw with intent. They want the horse to be running and the shark to have teeth, and they can manage a thirteen-step lesson with a couple of details at the end. This is also the age where children decide whether they are “good at drawing”, so pick lessons that finish well: the ones below are chosen for a reliably good result.

Tips for drawing with 7 year olds
- Show them the replay at the top of the lesson first, then the steps. Seeing the whole order once makes the steps make sense.
- Encourage a second go at the same drawing a day later; the second one is always better, and noticing that is the lesson.
- Thirteen steps is about fifteen minutes. Don’t rush the colouring.
Questions parents and teachers ask
What should a 7 year old draw?
Animals in a pose (a running horse, a swimming dolphin), simple characters (a knight, a mermaid) and scenes with more than one thing in them. The lessons above are twelve to thirteen steps.
Are these step by step?
Yes: every lesson shows the new lines in red on each step, with an animated replay and a printable worksheet.
