How to Draw a Giraffe

12 steps · Tricky · about 9 min

Draw a giraffe in 12 steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Draw a big round head near the top left, a little taller than wide. Leave room on the right.

Tip A big head makes it cute.

  2. Step 2: Friendly face

Draw a friendly face, with 2 big oval eyes and an egg nose with a smile under them.

Tip Put a black dot and white shine in each eye. Add 2 nostril dots.

  3. Step 3: Top of the head

On top of the head, draw 2 lollipop horns with a leaf ear beside each one.

Tip Put a smaller leaf inside each ear. Ears point up and out.

  4. Step 4: Long neck

From the chin draw 2 neck lines down to the right, to the middle. Add 3 hair bumps on top.

Tip The neck gets wider at the body. Stop the hair bumps before the back.

  5. Step 5: Bean body

From the neck draw a big bean body: long back, round bottom, then the tummy up to the chest.

Tip A bean, not a loaf: the bottom is rounder and higher than the chest.

  6. Step 6: Two legs

Draw a ground line, then a front leg under the chest and a back leg under the bottom.

Tip Legs get thinner below the knee and end in a doorstop hoof. The back leg bends back.

  7. Step 7: The far legs

Draw 2 more legs peeking out from behind the first ones, with the hooves a little apart.

Tip Only draw the parts you can see. All 4 hooves touch the ground.

  8. Step 8: The tail

From the top corner of the bottom draw a thin tail hanging down. Add a leaf tuft on the end.

Tip The tail grows from the top corner of the bottom, not the back.

  9. Step 9: Patches

Cover the body and neck with big wobbly patches, like crooked paving stones with little gaps between them.

Tip Keep the patches big and simple, with a little space from the outline.

  10. Step 10: Colour it yellow

Colour the giraffe yellow, around the patches. Colour the nose sand.

Tip Leave the eyes white, and save the ear insides, mane, horn knobs, tail tuft and hooves for later.

  11. Step 11: Peach ears, ginger patches

Colour the ear insides peach and all the patches on the body and neck ginger.

  12. Step 12: Brown hair, grey hooves

Colour the mane, horn knobs and tail tuft brown, and the hooves dark grey.
