How to Draw a Puppy Running

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a puppy running in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: happy head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Happy head

Near the top left draw a big head: a round top and a snout poking out to the left.

Tip The head is big, almost half as long as the body. Leave room on the right.

  2. Step 2: Eye and nose

Draw 1 big oval eye with a black dot inside. Colour a black nose on the tip of the snout.

Tip We see the puppy from the side, so only 1 eye shows. Leave a tiny white shine.

  3. Step 3: Smile and tongue

Start at the snout's front. Draw a smile line back to the cheek. Hang a U tongue from it.

Tip Rub out the chin line inside the tongue.

  4. Step 4: Flying ears

From the top of the head draw a long floppy ear flying back. Peek a second ear out behind it.

Tip Rub out the head line inside the big ear.

  5. Step 5: Long back

Start on the back of the head. Draw a long back to the right and stop round the bottom.

Tip The back is almost flat, then curls down at the end.

  6. Step 6: Reaching front leg

From the chin draw the chest, then a leg reaching forward to a big paw and back to the body.

Tip The leg bends at the elbow and gets thinner before the paw.

  7. Step 7: Tummy and back leg

From the front leg draw the tummy. Then a thick leg kicking back to a paw, up to the bottom.

Tip The back leg is fat at the top and bends half way down.

  8. Step 8: Far legs

Draw 2 more legs peeking out from behind: one under the chest and one under the tummy.

Tip Only draw the part you can see. Each one ends in a big paw.

  9. Step 9: Streaming tail

Start on top of the bottom. Draw a tail streaming back to a round tip, then back to the body.

Tip Thick at the body, thinner at the tip.

  10. Step 10: Toes and ground

Draw 2 short toe lines on each of the 4 paws. Draw a ground line under the back paws.

Tip The front paws are in the air. The puppy is running fast!

  11. Step 11: Pink and tan

Colour the tongue pink. Colour the puppy tan around it. Leave the 2 ears and the eye white.

  12. Step 12: Brown ears

Colour the 2 flying ears brown. Your running puppy is done!
