How to Draw an Oarfish

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an oarfish in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: long ribbon body.

Print

  1. Step 1: Long ribbon body

Draw a small round head near the left edge. Add a long thin ribbon body wiggling across to a point.

Tip An oarfish is 8 times longer than it is tall.

  2. Step 2: Eye and mouth

Draw a big eye in the head with a dot and a shine. Add a tiny mouth at the front.

  3. Step 3: Red crown

On top of the head draw a small crown of 4 soft rays, all sweeping back toward the tail.

Tip Keep the rays short, no taller than the eye.

  4. Step 4: Fin along the back

Start behind the crown. Draw one long low fin along the back and stop near the tail. Add 5 rays.

  5. Step 5: Two long oars

Under the head draw 2 long thin oars trailing back under the belly, each with a small paddle end.

Tip The oars are where the name comes from.

  6. Step 6: Tiny tail

Draw a tiny fan tail at the far right point. Start at the top and stop at the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Gill and side line

Draw a short C behind the head for the gill. Add one long line along the middle of the ribbon.

  8. Step 8: Bubbles

In front of the head draw 3 bubbles floating up. Make each one bigger than the last.

  9. Step 9: Sand and seaweed

Draw a wavy sand line from edge to edge. At each side, stand 2 tall wavy seaweed ribbons on it.

  10. Step 10: Sandy floor, blue bubbles

Colour the floor under the sand line sandy and the bubbles light blue.

  11. Step 11: Silver body

Colour the whole body and head silver grey. Leave the eye white. Add a soft pink dot on the cheek.

  12. Step 12: Red crown and fins

Colour the crown, the long back fin, the two oars and the tiny tail red.

  13. Step 13: Green seaweed

Colour the seaweed green. Go over your lines and your oarfish is done!
