12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a burrowing owl in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

Near the top of your paper, draw a big round head, a little wider than tall and flat on top.

Tip Leave lots of room below: this owl has long legs.

  2. Step 2: Two huge eyes

Below the middle of the head, draw 2 huge circle eyes a thumb apart. Add big black dots and shines.

Tip Owl eyes are enormous: each one is nearly a third of the head.

  3. Step 3: The beak

Under the gap between the eyes, draw a fat teardrop beak hanging point down.

  4. Step 4: Heart face

Start at the top left of the beak. Draw a big heart round both eyes, back to the beak.

  5. Step 5: Plump body

Start under the left cheek. Draw a big C down to the bottom middle. Same right, so they meet.

  6. Step 6: Folded wings

Start under the head. Draw a curved wing down to the body side, with 2 soft feather bumps. Same right.

  7. Step 7: Feathery tummy

Between the wings, draw 3 little U's side by side. Add 2 more U's below, in the gaps.

  8. Step 8: Two long legs

From under the body, draw 2 long legs, thin at the ankles, each ending in 3 round toes.

Tip Burrowing owls have long legs like stilts.

  9. Step 9: Burrow and ground

Start right of the owl. Draw a low mound back down to the ground. Add a hole and ground line.

  10. Step 10: Yellow eyes, sand legs

Colour the eyes and beak yellow, and both long legs sand. Leave the shines white.

  11. Step 11: Tan face, brown wings

Colour the heart face and the tummy tan. Colour the wings light brown.

  12. Step 12: Brown head and mound

Colour the head brown around the face, the mound brown and the hole black. Your owl is done!
