How to Draw a Tulip Tree

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a tulip tree in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the leafy top.

Print

  1. Step 1: The leafy top

Start low on the left. Draw big soft bumps up and over the top. Stop low on the right.

Tip Make it taller than it is wide, like an egg: a tulip tree is a tall tree.

  2. Step 2: Bumps underneath

Start where you stopped. Draw 5 shallow bumps across the bottom, until you meet the other end.

Tip Keep these bumps flatter than the ones on top.

  3. Step 3: The trunk

Start under the leaves, left of the middle. Draw a line down, curving out to a root. Same right.

Tip A tulip tree has a tall straight trunk. Only the very bottom spreads out.

  4. Step 4: The top tulip

Near the top of the leaves draw a U cup. Zigzag across its top with 3 petal points.

Tip The flowers look like tulips. That is how the tulip tree got its name.

  5. Step 5: Two side tulips

Draw 2 more tulips the same way, one on each side, a little lower. Tip them outwards.

  6. Step 6: Two low tulips

Draw 2 smaller tulips side by side near the bottom of the leaves.

  7. Step 7: Front petals

On each tulip start at each dip. Draw a curve bowing out and down. Stop at the bottom middle.

Tip The front petal hides the middle, so each tulip looks like a closed cup.

  8. Step 8: Ground and grass

Draw a long ground line under the trunk, from well left to well right. Add grass blades beside the trunk.

  9. Step 9: Yellow petals

Go over your lines. Colour the 2 side petals of each tulip yellow.

  10. Step 10: Orange petals

Colour the front petal of each tulip orange.

  11. Step 11: Green leaves

Colour the leafy top green, around the 5 tulips.

Tip Go slowly round each flower so the green stays off the petals.

  12. Step 12: Brown trunk

Colour the trunk brown, down to the ground. Your tulip tree is done!
