How to Draw a Triceratops

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a triceratops in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big barrel body.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big barrel body

Start near the top middle. Draw a hill over the back and tail, then the tummy back to the front.

Tip Leave the front open for the head and frill. The tail stays well above the ground.

  2. Step 2: The head

In front of the body, draw a big round head tipped nose-down, with a little beak hook.

Tip The tummy line starts under its chin.

  3. Step 3: Eye, smile, nostril

Draw a big eye in the middle of the head. Draw the mouth from the beak to under the eye.

Tip Add a black pupil with a shine, and a nostril dot on the snout.

  4. Step 4: Tummy band

Start on the tummy under the chin. Draw a band line just above it, ending at the tail tip.

Tip Keep it close to the tummy at the front and a finger above it under the body.

  5. Step 5: The big frill

Start on top of the head behind the brow. Draw a huge fan up and back, ending on the cheek.

Tip The frill is bigger than the head, like a round shield, and touches the back line.

  6. Step 6: Three horns

Draw 2 long horns on the brow pointing up and forward, one behind the other. Add a short nose horn.

Tip Fat at the bottom, sharp at the tip. The head line runs across each base.

  7. Step 7: Front leg

Start on the band line under the chest. Draw a stumpy leg with a flat foot, back to the band.

Tip Add 3 round toenails. Rub out the lines inside the leg.

  8. Step 8: Back leg

Start on the band line under the hip. Draw a chunkier leg with a flat foot, back to the band.

Tip Add 3 round toenails. Keep both feet level on the ground.

  9. Step 9: The far legs

Draw a second leg peeking out behind the front leg, and another peeking out in front of the back leg.

Tip The far legs are half hidden, so all 4 legs show.

  10. Step 10: The ground

Draw one long straight line under all the feet, right across the paper. The tail floats above it.

  11. Step 11: Cream horns and band

Colour the 3 horns, the toenails and the tummy band cream.

  12. Step 12: Tan body, brown frill

Colour the head, body and near legs tan around the cream. Colour the frill and far legs brown.

Tip Go over your lines first. Leave the eye white.
