How to Draw a Blue Tang

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a blue tang in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: eye and pointy snout.

Print

  1. Step 1: Eye and pointy snout

Draw a huge eye. Start left of it, draw a pointy snout, and stop below the eye. Add a smile.

Tip Keep the eye left of the middle, so the tail has room.

  2. Step 2: Fat egg body

From the snout, draw a rainbow over the eye to the thin tail end. Draw the belly the same way.

  3. Step 3: Bow-tie tail

From the back's end, draw a tail lobe up and back to a dent, then another down to the belly.

Tip A sideways bow tie: no line across the thin end.

  4. Step 4: Long top fin

Start above the eye. Draw a long low fin along the back, stopping near the tail. Add 4 rays.

Tip Long and low, not a tall sail: it hugs the back like a ribbon.

  5. Step 5: Gill

A finger behind the eye, draw a short C bowing toward the tail, not touching the back or belly.

  6. Step 6: Side fin

Behind the gill, below the middle, draw a leaf fin lying flat, pointing at the tail. Add 2 rays.

  7. Step 7: Long belly fin

Start under the eye. Draw a long low fin along the belly, stopping near the tail. Add 3 rays.

  8. Step 8: Paintbrush stripe

Behind the eye, draw a long band along the back that swoops down onto the tail, like a paintbrush tip.

Tip Keep it under the top fin and just clear of the eye.

  9. Step 9: Bubbles

Above the snout, draw 3 bubbles floating up: small, bigger, biggest.

  10. Step 10: Sand and seaweed

Draw a wavy sand line across the bottom. Add 2 wiggly seaweed blades on the left, 1 on the right.

  11. Step 11: Yellow tail and fin

Colour the tail and the side fin yellow. Colour the floor under the sand line sandy.

  12. Step 12: Blue bubbles, green seaweed

Colour the bubbles light blue and the seaweed green.

  13. Step 13: Blue body, black stripe

Colour the body and long fins blue, around the side fin and stripe. Colour the stripe black.

    Tip Leave the eye white.
