How to Draw a Tree

11 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the leafy top.

Print

  1. Step 1: The leafy top

Start on the left above the middle. Draw a rainbow of big soft bumps up and over, stopping level.

Tip Lumpy is good: real trees are lumpy.

  2. Step 2: Bumps underneath

Start where the rainbow ended. Draw 5 shallow bumps hanging down and across to meet the other end.

  3. Step 3: The trunk

From under the leaves, draw a line straight down like a post, curving out into a root. Do both sides.

  4. Step 4: Two branches

From the bottom of the leaves, draw a wide V down into the trunk and back up. Round off its point.

  5. Step 5: Knot hole and bark

Low on the trunk, draw a small egg knot hole. Add a curved line beside it and 2 bark dashes.

  6. Step 6: Leafy hills

Halfway up the leaves, draw a row of hill bumps from edge to edge, dipping like a smile.

  7. Step 7: Apples

Draw 4 big round apples in the leaves, clear of every line. Give each a stem and a little leaf.

  8. Step 8: Ground and fallen apple

Draw a long ground line under the roots. Add one fallen apple on the ground, with a stem and leaf.

  9. Step 9: Colour the trunk wood

Colour the trunk and branches wood brown, around the knot hole, leaving the V empty. Colour the knot darker brown.

  10. Step 10: Colour the leaves green

Colour the cloud of leaves green, going around the apples, and the little leaf on the fallen apple.

  11. Step 11: Red apples

    Colour the 5 apples red.
