How to Draw a Trapdoor

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a trapdoor in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the hole.

Print

  1. Step 1: The hole

Low down draw the hole: a box with a long flat bottom, sides leaning in, and a shorter top.

Tip Wider at the front than the back, so it lies flat on the floor.

  2. Step 2: The open door

From the hole's top corners draw 2 tall lines up, leaning in a bit. Join them across the top.

  3. Step 3: A happy face

On the door draw 2 big eyes with dots and shines, a wide smile, and a cheek each end.

  4. Step 4: A border

Inside the door draw a second, smaller box a finger in from the edge, for the raised panel.

  5. Step 5: The ring handle

In the panel's bottom right corner, draw a small flat plate with a round ring hanging from it.

Tip Keep the handle away from the smile, so it does not look like a tongue.

  6. Step 6: The ladder

In the hole draw a ladder: 2 bars from the top edge down to the bottom, with 3 rungs.

Tip The bars are a thumb apart and spread a little as they go down.

  7. Step 7: Hinges

Where the door meets the floor, draw a small flat rectangle at each end for the hinges.

  8. Step 8: Floor planks

Draw 4 long floor lines right across, skipping the hole, 2 along its edges. Add 3 short slanting plank ends.

  9. Step 9: Sparkles

Draw 3 sparkle stars round the door: one up left, one up right, one lower right.

Tip Each star: 4 dots like a plus sign, joined by curves that dip in.

  10. Step 10: Pink cheeks, yellow sparkles

Go over your lines. Colour the cheeks pink and the 3 sparkles yellow.

  11. Step 11: Tan ladder, grey handle

Colour the ladder tan. Colour the ring, its plate and both hinges grey.

  12. Step 12: Brown door, navy hole

Colour the door brown around the face and handle, leaving the eyes white. Colour the hole navy around the ladder.
