How to Draw a Train
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: fat boiler.
Step 1: Fat boiler
Start high, left of the middle. Draw a long hill right, round a big nose, back to under the start.
Step 2: Cab and roof
Start where the boiler began. Draw a tall box cab up, across, and down to the tummy. Add a roof.
Tip The arched roof pokes out each side like a hat brim.
Step 3: Trumpet funnel
Start on the boiler top near the middle. Draw a tall trumpet funnel back down to the boiler.
Step 4: Puffs of smoke
Start on the funnel rim. Draw a bumpy smoke puff, then 2 more puffs floating up and back.
Step 5: Dome and lamp
Draw a dome by the cab and a small lamp by the funnel. Start and stop on the boiler top.
Step 6: Smokebox line
Just left of the funnel, draw a line from the boiler top down to the tummy.
Tip The smokebox is the front part, in front of this line.
Step 7: Round face
Draw a big face circle in the middle of the nose.
Tip The face is about half as tall as the nose, with room all round it.
Step 8: Big eyes and smile
Draw 2 big round eyes in the circle. Draw a U smile from under the left eye to the right.
Step 9: Running board
Start at the cab's bottom back corner. Draw down a little, along under the engine, and up to the nose.
Step 10: Rail and wheels
Draw a rail under the engine. Add 3 big wheels on it: under the cab, the boiler and the face.
Step 11: The window
In the cab draw a big arched window: up the left, a rainbow over, down the right, across the bottom.
Step 12: Tyres and hubs
Draw a ring inside each big wheel. Draw a small round hub in the middle of each wheel.
Step 13: Connecting rod
Start at the back hub. Draw a long thin bar through the middle hub to the front hub.
Step 14: Cowcatcher
Start under the running board by the front wheel. Draw down to the rail, along it, and slant back up.
Tip Add 3 slanted slats inside. It pushes things off the track.
Step 15: Yellow trim, pink cheeks
Colour the roof, dome, lamp and cowcatcher yellow. Give the engine 2 rosy pink cheeks.
Step 16: Red engine, sky window
Colour the cab, the back of the boiler and the running board red. Colour the window sky blue.
Step 17: Grey smokebox and wheels
Colour the smokebox, funnel, wheels and rod dark grey, around the white face. Leave the eyes and hubs white.
