How to Draw a Steam Train

13 steps · Tricky · about 10 min

Draw a steam train in 13 steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: fat boiler.

Print

  1. Step 1: Fat boiler

Start left of the middle. Draw a long hill right, round a big nose, then straight back. Stop underneath.

Tip Leave the back end open. The cab goes there.

  2. Step 2: Cab and roof

Start at the open back. Draw a tall box cab up, across and down to the tummy line.

Tip The cab is taller than the boiler.

  3. Step 3: Funnel and smoke

Start on the boiler top near the front. Draw a trumpet funnel back down to the boiler. Add 3 puffs.

  4. Step 4: Dome and lamp

Start on the boiler by the cab. Draw a dome back to the boiler. Add a lamp on the nose.

  5. Step 5: Front line and face

Draw a line from under the funnel down to the tummy. On the nose, draw a big circle.

  6. Step 6: Big eyes and smile

In the face, draw 2 big eyes with pupils and shines. Add a U smile from eye to eye.

  7. Step 7: Running board

Start at the cab's bottom back corner. Draw a flat shelf under the whole engine, up to the nose.

  8. Step 8: Rail and wheels

Draw one long rail under the engine. On it, draw 2 big wheels and a smaller one under the nose.

Tip Wheel tops hide under the running board.

  9. Step 9: Arched window

In the cab, draw a big window with a rainbow top. Start a thumb above the floor and return there.

  10. Step 10: Tyres, hubs and rod

Draw a ring in each big wheel and a hub in every middle. Join the big hubs with a rod.

  11. Step 11: Yellow trim, pink cheeks

Colour the roof, dome, lamp and rod yellow. Add 2 pink cheeks beside the smile.

  12. Step 12: Blue window, green engine

Colour the window sky blue. Colour the cab, boiler back and running board green.

  13. Step 13: Red wheels, black front

Colour the wheels red around the rod, and the front and funnel black. Leave the face, eyes and hubs white.
