How to Draw a Tomatillo

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a tomatillo in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the fruit.

Print

  1. Step 1: The fruit

Left of the middle, draw a squashed round fruit as big as a plum.

Tip A tomatillo is a green tomato that grows inside its own paper lantern.

  2. Step 2: Left husk flap

From a point above the fruit, draw a papery flap down over its left side, curling out at the bottom.

  3. Step 3: Right husk flap

From the same point draw the right flap, joined to the first down to the fruit, then curling out.

  4. Step 4: The stem

On the top point draw a short curved stem.

  5. Step 5: Husk veins

On each flap draw 2 veins from near the top point, stopping short of the curled edge.

  6. Step 6: A closed lantern

To the right draw a second tomatillo still wrapped: a pointed egg like a paper lantern, stem on top.

  7. Step 7: Lantern veins

On the lantern draw 3 veins from top point to bottom point: one straight down, one bowing out each side.

  8. Step 8: The ground

Draw a long ground line just touching the bottoms of both, lifting your pencil where it would cross them.

  9. Step 9: Papery husk

Go over your lines, then colour the husk flaps and the lantern a pale sand colour.

  10. Step 10: Green fruit, brown stems

Colour the round fruit light leaf green and both stems brown, and your tomatillo is done!
