How to Draw the Tortoise and the Hare
Draw the Tortoise and the Hare in 13 steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: tortoise head.
Step 1: Tortoise head
On the left, draw a small egg lying down for the head. Add an eye, a nostril and a smile.
Step 2: High shell
From behind the head, draw a tall dome back and down to chin level. Add a rim band under it.
Step 3: Four stumpy legs
Under the rim, draw 2 thick legs down to the ground, each with 2 toe bumps. Add 2 peeking behind.
Tip Tortoise legs are short and thick, like little tree trunks.
Step 4: Tail and honeycomb
Draw a stubby tail at the back. On the shell, draw a hexagon with short lines out to the rim.
Step 5: Hare head and ears
On the right, draw a bun head, wide at the cheeks. Add 2 tall ears with a smaller ear inside.
Step 6: Sleepy face
Halfway down the head, draw 2 closed eyes like tiny smiles. Add a nose, a smile, 2 teeth and whiskers.
Step 7: Body and arms
Under one cheek, draw the body round a plump bottom to the other cheek. Add 2 arms with round fists.
Tip His round fists rest on his tummy.
Step 8: Tummy and feet
Under the fists, draw a wide tummy patch. At each bottom corner, draw a flat foot on the ground.
Step 9: Ground and flag
Draw a ground line from behind the tortoise to the far right. There, draw a pole up to a flag.
Step 10: Sleepy Zzz
Beside the hare's left ear, draw 3 Z's climbing up and away, each a bit bigger.
Step 11: Pink and cream
Colour the hare's inner ears, nose and fists pink, and his tummy cream. Give the tortoise a pink cheek.
Step 12: Tan fur, red flag
Colour the tortoise's skin, middle cell and the hare's fur tan, around the pink and cream. Colour the flag red.
Tip Leave the tortoise's eye and the hare's teeth white.
Step 13: Brown shell
Colour the shell brown around the middle cell, the rim wood brown and the far legs dark brown.
Tip Slow and steady wins the race!
