How to Draw a Cockatrice

13 steps · Tricky · about 10 min

Draw a cockatrice in 13 steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

On the left, draw a big egg on its side for the head, with a flat front for the beak.

Tip Leave room on the right for the body, wing and tail.

  2. Step 2: Comb, beak and wattle

On top of the head, draw a comb of 4 bumps. Add a pointed beak and a wattle.

  3. Step 3: Two big eyes

Halfway down the head, draw 2 big tall oval eyes close together, with a dot and shine.

  4. Step 4: Ground, back and bottom

Draw a ground line. From the head, draw one line down, round a big bottom, down to the ground.

  5. Step 5: Tummy and plate

From under the chin, draw a fat C tummy down to the ground. Add an egg plate with 3 bands.

  6. Step 6: Near front leg

From the chest, draw a leg down to a mitten paw on the ground, and back up beside the plate.

  7. Step 7: Far front leg

Start beside the plate. Draw the far front leg down to a paw, then back up to the plate.

  8. Step 8: Back foot and thigh

Start on the back. Draw a thigh curving down to the ground. Add a rounded paw with 2 toes.

  9. Step 9: Feathered wing

From behind the head, draw a curved arm up to a point. Add 6 round feathers down to the back.

Tip Draw a feather line into each dip between the round feathers.

  10. Step 10: Snake tail

From the bottom, draw a snake tail sweeping right and curving up to a sharp point. Add 3 curved bands.

  11. Step 11: Yellow beak and plate

Leave the eyes white. Colour the beak and the tummy plate yellow. Add a pink cheek under the back eye.

  12. Step 12: Ginger head, green body

Colour the head ginger around the eyes and cheek. Colour the body, legs and tail green around the plate.

  13. Step 13: Red comb, brown wing

Colour the comb and the wattle red. Colour the wing brown.
