How to Draw a Manticore

13 steps · Tricky · about 10 min

Draw a manticore in 13 steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the face.

Print

  1. Step 1: The face

Near the top of your paper draw a fat egg face with a flat chin and big round cheeks.

Tip Leave room all round for the mane, and half the paper below.

  2. Step 2: Ears and eyes

Draw a rainbow ear on each top corner. On the face's middle draw 2 big egg eyes with black dots.

Tip The eyes are big, about as wide as your thumb.

  3. Step 3: The mane

Round the face draw a bumpy cloud mane from ear to ear under the chin, and a hill on top.

Tip Big hills at the sides, small under the chin. It goes behind the ears.

  4. Step 4: Nose and cheek pads

Under the eyes draw a small black triangle nose, point down. Under it draw 2 plump oval cheek pads, touching.

Tip The nose point sits in the little V between the pads.

  5. Step 5: The smile

Start under the left pad. Draw a shallow smile, dipping a little in the middle. Stop under the right pad.

  6. Step 6: Ground and body

Draw a ground line a hand under the mane. From the mane draw a plump pear body down to it.

Tip The sides bulge out into round hips.

  7. Step 7: Front legs

Start on the mane. Draw 2 front legs side by side down to mitten paws, sharing one middle line.

Tip Each leg gets thinner at the wrist, then puffs out into a round paw.

  8. Step 8: Back paws

Start low on each body side. Draw a little hill paw behind the front paw, ending on the ground.

Tip Small round buns, half hidden behind the front paws.

  9. Step 9: Bat wings

From each side draw a bat wing up to a sharp tip, then 3 scoops back to the body.

Tip The wings are behind the body: only draw the parts that poke out.

  10. Step 10: Scorpion tail

From the right hip curl a tail out, up and over. Add 4 lines, a bulb and a hook.

Tip The tail gets thinner as it curls, and the sharp hook keeps curling round.

  11. Step 11: Toes and inner ears

Draw 2 toe curves in each front paw and one in each back paw. Add a rainbow in each ear.

  12. Step 12: Sand fur, purple wings

Colour the face, ears, body, legs and paws sand around the pads and inner ears, and the wings purple.

    Tip Leave the eyes white.

  13. Step 13: Ginger mane and tail

Colour the pads and inner ears peach, the mane and scorpion tail ginger, and the hook black.
