How to Draw a Tessellation
Draw a tessellation in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the square.
Step 1: The square
In the middle of your paper draw a big square with soft corners, nearly as big as your page.
Tip A tessellation is shapes that fit together with no gaps, like honeycomb.
Step 2: The first hexagon
In the top half of the square draw one hexagon: 6 straight sides, pointy at top and bottom.
Step 3: Hexagons beside it
On each side of it draw another hexagon the same size, sharing a flat side, with no gap.
Step 4: 2 hexagons below
Under the row draw 2 more hexagons, each tucked into the notch between 2 hexagons above.
Step 5: The bottom row
Under those draw a row of 3 more hexagons tucked into the notches. That makes 8 hexagons, like honeycomb.
Step 6: Sparkles
Draw 4 sparkle stars off the corners of the square.
Step 7: Cream square
Go over your lines, then colour the square cream, going around the hexagons.
Step 8: Yellow sparkles
Colour the 4 sparkles yellow.
Step 9: Orange hexagons
Colour the 4 corner hexagons orange.
Step 10: Teal hexagons
Colour the other 4 hexagons teal. Your tessellation is done!
