How to Draw a Tap Dancer

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a tap dancer in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: egg head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Egg head

Near the top of your paper, a little left of the middle, draw an egg head, narrower at the chin.

Tip Leave room on the right for the hat.

  2. Step 2: Happy face

Just below the middle of the head draw 2 oval eyes with black dots. Add a wide smile under them.

  3. Step 3: Bob of hair

Draw hair over the head and down both sides to the chin. Add a fringe above the eyes.

Tip Rub out the head line inside the hair.

  4. Step 4: Top and bow tie

Draw a short neck and a top with sloping shoulders and 2 short sleeves. Add a bow tie.

Tip One sleeve points down and out, the other points up and out.

  5. Step 5: Arm reaching down

From the left sleeve draw an arm reaching down and out. End it in a mitten hand with a thumb.

Tip Make the arm a little thinner at the wrist.

  6. Step 6: The cane

Draw a long thin cane with a round knob on top, behind the hand and down to the floor.

  7. Step 7: Arm lifted high

From the other sleeve draw an arm going out, then bending up at the elbow. Add a mitten hand.

  8. Step 8: Top hat

Behind the high hand draw a long thin brim. On it draw a tall crown with a band line across.

Tip The hand is holding the hat by its brim.

  9. Step 9: Standing and kicking

Under the top draw one leg standing straight. Draw the other leg kicking out to the side.

Tip Legs are wide at the top and thinner at the ankle.

  10. Step 10: Two shoes

Draw a shoe on each foot with a flat sole and a round toe. The kicking toe points up.

  11. Step 11: Floor and tap marks

Draw a floor line under the standing shoe and the cane. Add 3 short lines beside the kicking toe.

Tip The 3 lines are the tap, tap, tap sound.

  12. Step 12: Tan skin, pink cheeks

Colour 2 pink cheeks. Colour the face, neck, arms and hands tan. Leave the eyes white.

  13. Step 13: Red top, brown cane

Colour the top and the hat band red. Colour the cane brown.

  14. Step 14: Navy and black

Colour the trousers navy. Colour the hair, hat, bow tie and shoes black. Leave a white shine on each toe.
