How to Draw Stalagmites and Stalactites
Draw stalagmites and stalactites in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: inside the cave.
Step 1: Inside the cave
Draw a big bumpy arch for the inside of the cave. Start low on the left, stop on the right.
Tip Make the roof wobble up and down a little.
Step 2: The floor
Start left of the arch. Draw a straight line for the floor and stop past the other side.
Step 3: Rock all round
Start on the floor left of the arch. Draw a lumpy rock over it and stop on the floor.
Step 4: Long stalactites
From the roof, hang 2 long pointed cones. They start and stop on the roof.
Tip Stalactites hang down. They hold on tight to the ceiling.
Step 5: Short stalactites
On the right, hang 2 shorter pointed cones. They start and stop on the roof too.
Step 6: Stalagmites
On the floor, draw 4 fat cones standing up. Each one starts and stops on the floor.
Tip Stalagmites stand up from the ground. Put one right under the longest stalactite.
Step 7: A joined column
Between the 2 long stalactites, draw a column from the roof down to the floor, thin in the middle.
Tip A column is a stalactite and a stalagmite that grew together.
Step 8: A falling drip
Between the 2 tips that nearly meet, draw a small water drop with a pointed top.
Tip Each drip leaves a tiny bit of rock behind.
Step 9: Rock rings
Draw a short curved line across each big rock, from side to side, like a ring.
Step 10: Blue drip, tan rock
Colour the drip blue. Colour the rock, the stalactites, the stalagmites and the column tan.
Step 11: Dark cave
Colour the inside of the cave dark blue, around the rocks and the drip. Go over your lines!
