How to Draw a Spring

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a spring in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the top plate.

Print

  1. Step 1: The top plate

Near the top of your paper draw a flat rounded bar, about a hand wide.

  2. Step 2: The bottom plate

Near the bottom of your paper draw another flat bar the same size, straight below it.

  3. Step 3: Top of the coil

Start on the middle of the top plate. Swing right, left, right with round turns, and stop in the middle.

Tip Round every turn like the end of a sausage, never a sharp point.

  4. Step 4: Middle of the coil

Start where you stopped and keep the snake going: left, right, left. Stop in the middle again.

  5. Step 5: Bottom of the coil

Start where you stopped. Swing right, left, right, and stop on the middle of the bottom plate.

  6. Step 6: The floor

Draw a floor line along the bottom of the bottom plate, from well left to well right.

  7. Step 7: A shadow

Draw a flat oval shadow on the floor line, a little wider than the bottom plate.

  8. Step 8: Sparkles

Draw 2 small sparkle stars, one on each side of the coil.

  9. Step 9: Yellow sparkles

Go over your lines, then colour the 2 sparkles yellow.

  10. Step 10: Grey plates and shadow

Colour both plates and the shadow grey. Your spring is done!
