How to Draw a Spool of Thread
Draw a spool of thread in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the top rim.
Step 1: The top rim
Near the top draw a wide flat oval. Drop a short line from each end. Join them with a smile.
Step 2: The thread body
From under the rim draw 2 lines straight down, a little inside its ends. Join them with a smile curve.
Step 3: Two big eyes
On the front of the spool draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour a big black dot in each.
Step 4: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes draw a U smile from eye to eye. Add a round cheek beside each end.
Step 5: The bottom rim
Draw an oval rim under the thread: start at its left side, stop at its right. Add a thick edge.
Step 6: Thread lines
Draw 3 smile curves across the thread from side to side, one near the top and 2 near the bottom.
Step 7: The needle
Out of the top rim draw a long thin needle leaning right, with a tiny hole near its top.
Step 8: Loose thread
Start at the needle's hole. Draw a loose wiggly thread curling down the right side, stopping above the bottom rim.
Step 9: Sparkles and table
Add 3 sparkles in the air, and a straight table line under the spool from far left to far right.
Step 10: Red thread
Go over your lines, then colour the thread body red. Leave the eyes white.
Step 11: Wood rims, grey needle
Colour the top rim and the bottom rim wood brown, and the needle grey.
Step 12: Pink cheeks
Colour the cheeks pink, and your spool is ready to sew!
