How to Draw a Pilgrim Hat

Step 1: Top of the hat

Near the top, in the middle, draw a flat oval about a third as wide as your paper.

Tip Leave lots of room under it: the whole hat hangs from this oval.

Step 2: The crown

From each end of the oval, draw a line down and a little outwards. Join the bottoms with a smile.

Tip The crown gets a little narrower towards the top.

Step 3: Wide brim

Start low on the left of the crown. Swing a big wide oval out, under, and round to the right.

Tip The brim is almost twice as wide as the crown.

Step 4: Thick brim

From the left edge of the brim draw a big smile curve under it, stopping at the right edge.

Tip Keep the gap the same all round: the brim is a thick disc.

Step 5: Two big eyes

In the middle of the crown draw 2 big eyes. Colour a black dot in each, leaving a white speck.

Step 6: Big smile

Start under the left eye. Draw a big deep U smile across to under the right eye.

Step 7: Ribbon band

Start on the left of the crown, 2 fingers up. Draw a smile curve across, stopping on the right.

Tip The strip between this line and the crown bottom is the band.

Step 8: Square buckle

In the middle of the band draw a square buckle, a little taller than the band.

Step 9: Inside the buckle

Inside the buckle draw a smaller square, so the buckle is a thick frame.

Step 10: Twinkles and a table

Draw a twinkle by the hat's top right, a smaller one by the brim, and a table line underneath.

Tip The table line just kisses the bottom of the brim.

Step 11: Gold buckle, pink cheeks

Colour the buckle and twinkles gold yellow, and rub pink cheeks under the eyes. Leave the eyes white.

Step 12: Dark hat, black band

Colour the hat dark grey around the face and buckle, then the band black. Your pilgrim hat is done!

Tip Press softly on the dark grey so your face lines still show.
