How to Draw a Shetland Pony Foal
Draw a Shetland pony foal in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Near the top left draw a sideways head like a fat peanut: a big round cheek and a smaller nose.
Tip The nose end leans down to the left. Leave room on the right for the body.
Step 2: Eye and nose
Draw 1 big eye. From the nose top, curve a line down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.
Tip Give the eye a black dot and a white shine. We see the side, so only 1 eye.
Step 3: Ears and forelock
Draw 2 pointy ears standing up, with a leaf inside the front one. Add a fluffy forelock on the forehead.
Tip The forelock is 3 round bumps of hair. Keep it above the eye.
Step 4: The neck
Draw 2 short neck lines: one from behind the ears, one from under the head. Stop both halfway down.
Tip A Shetland pony has a short, thick neck. The front line bulges out a little.
Step 5: The body
From the neck draw a round bean body: a flat back, a round bottom, then the tummy to the chest.
Tip Shetland ponies are small and round, so make the body short and deep.
Step 6: The mane
Start behind the ears. Draw a fluffy mane of big round bumps along the neck, down to the back.
Tip Round bumps, no points. Stop where the neck meets the back.
Step 7: Two legs
Draw a ground line. Add a short, thick front leg under the chest and a back leg under the bottom.
Tip Give each leg a little knee bump and a flat hoof on the ground.
Step 8: The far legs
Draw 2 thinner legs peeking out from behind: one by the front leg, one by the back leg.
Tip Only draw the parts you can see.
Step 9: The tail
Where the back curves down, draw a bushy tail hanging to a round tip. Add 2 hair lines.
Tip Thick where it grows out, round at the end.
Step 10: Nose and ears
Go over your lines. Colour the nose patch cream and the ear inside peach. Leave the eye white.
Step 11: Colour it tan
Colour the head, ears, neck, body and legs tan, around the cream nose and peach ear. Skip the hooves.
Step 12: Mane, tail and hooves
Colour the forelock, mane and tail brown, and the 4 hooves dark grey. Your pony foal is done!
