12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a chickadee in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

Near the top left of your paper draw a big round head, a little wider than tall.

Tip Leave room on the right and below for the body and branch.

  2. Step 2: Tiny beak

Start on the front of the head. Draw a tiny fat triangle out to a point, back to the head.

  3. Step 3: Eye, cap and bib

Draw a big round eye behind the beak. Add a cap line above it and a bib curve below it.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

Start on the back of the head. Curve down the back, round a fat belly, and stop under the beak.

Tip A plump egg hanging under the head, narrower than the head.

  5. Step 5: Fan tail

Start on the back end of the body. Draw a fan pointing down and back, then back to the tummy.

  6. Step 6: Folded wing

Start under the back of the head. Draw a shoulder forward, then sweep back to a point by the tail.

  7. Step 7: Front leg and toes

Start under the front of the tummy. Draw a short thin leg with 3 toes, back to the tummy.

  8. Step 8: Back leg and toes

A thumb behind the first leg draw a second leg the same way, starting and stopping on the tummy.

  9. Step 9: The branch

From the left edge, draw a branch top hopping over the toes, round the end, and back along the bottom.

  10. Step 10: Sand tummy, brown branch

Colour the chest and tummy sand, around the wing. Colour the branch brown, around the toes.

  11. Step 11: Grey wing and tail

Colour the wing, the back and the fan tail grey, then the beak, legs and toes dark grey.

  12. Step 12: Black cap and bib

Colour the cap on top of the head black, and the bib under the beak black. Leave the cheek white.

    Tip Keep the eyes white.
