How to Draw Shading a Cube
Draw shading a cube in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the front square.
Step 1: The front square
A little left of the middle draw a square for the front of the cube, all 4 sides the same.
Tip Leave room top-left for the sun: the light has to come from somewhere.
Step 2: The sun
Near the top-left corner draw a small round sun with short rays all the way round.
Step 3: The top
Start at the top-left corner. Slant up right, go across, and slant back down to the top-right corner.
Tip Keep the 2 slanted lines the same length and leaning the same way.
Step 4: The side
Start at the top's far-right corner. Go straight down, then slant down-left, stop at the square's bottom-right corner.
Step 5: The floor
Draw a straight floor line along the bottom of the square, from the left edge to the right edge.
Step 6: The cast shadow
Start at the square's bottom-right corner. Draw a leaning shadow box out to the right, back to the corner.
Tip The shadow always falls on the side away from the light.
Step 7: Yellow sun
Go over your lines, then colour the sun yellow.
Step 8: Sky blue top
Colour the top sky blue. It faces the sun, so it is the lightest.
Step 9: Grey shadow
Colour the cast shadow on the floor grey.
Step 10: Blue front
Colour the front square blue. It gets some sun, so it is the middle blue.
Step 11: Navy side
Colour the side navy. It faces away from the sun, so it is the darkest. Your cube looks solid!
