How to Draw a Sextant
Draw a sextant in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big slice.
Step 1: Big slice
Draw a big pizza slice: 2 long straight sides from a top point, joined by a curved bottom.
Tip Make both sides the same length.
Step 2: Swinging arm
Draw a small circle under the point. From it draw a long leaning bar past the curve, to a knob.
Tip The arm slides along the curve to measure.
Step 3: Scale band
Start on the left side. Draw a second curve a finger above the bottom. Stop on the right side.
Tip Skip over the arm.
Step 4: Two side bars
Inside each long side draw a line next to it, from the band up to the arm.
Step 5: Scale marks
Draw 6 short marks down from the top of the band: 1 left of the arm, 5 right.
Step 6: Telescope
Across the right bar draw a long flat box with a thin ring on its left end.
Step 7: Eyepiece
On the right end of the telescope draw a thinner box and a small cup to look through.
Step 8: Little mirror
On the left bar, level with the telescope, draw a small upright box for the mirror.
Step 9: Cream band, blue mirror
Colour the curved band cream and the little mirror light blue. Go around the arm.
Step 10: Yellow frame
Colour the 2 side bars and the top point yellow. Go around the arm, circle, telescope and mirror.
Step 11: Grey telescope
Colour the telescope, the eyepiece, the small circle and the knob grey.
Step 12: Brown arm
Colour the long arm brown. Go over your lines and your sextant is ready to sail.

Your finished drawing
Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a sextant, drawn by you.
