How to Draw a Sedimentary Rock
Draw a sedimentary rock in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the rock.
Step 1: The rock
In the middle, draw a big rock with straight sides and blunt corners. Make it wide, with a flat bottom.
Tip 10 straight sides: 2 up each side, 5 over the top and 1 long flat one underneath.
Step 2: Two top layers
Start on the left edge. Draw a gently wavy line across and stop at the right edge. Add another below.
Tip Sedimentary rock is made of layers, like a stack of blankets.
Step 3: Two lower layers
Start on the left edge again. Draw 2 more wavy lines across, close together, and stop at the right edge.
Tip Keep every line the same wavy shape so the layers stay even.
Step 4: Pebbles
In the second layer down, draw 5 little oval pebbles, some higher and some lower, each a different size.
Tip Keep them away from the wavy lines.
Step 5: A shell fossil
In the bottom layer, draw a small circle. Start on its edge, curl a spiral in, stop in the middle.
Tip Fossils are shells and bones that got buried in the layers long ago.
Step 6: A crack
Start on the top edge, left of the middle. Draw a short zigzag crack down. Stop inside the top layer.
Step 7: The ground
Draw a long ground line along the flat bottom of the rock, sticking out past both sides.
Step 8: Pebble and grass
On the ground, draw a small oval pebble on the right and 2 short grass blades on the left.
Step 9: Cream and sand
Go over your lines. Colour the shell cream and the pebbly layer sandy yellow, around the pebbles.
Step 10: Tan bottom layer
Colour the thick bottom layer tan, around the shell.
Step 11: Grey top and pebbles
Colour the top layer grey, and all 6 pebbles grey too.
Step 12: Orange layer
Colour the middle layer orange.
Step 13: Brown layer
Colour the thin layer brown, and your sedimentary rock is done!
