How to Draw a Root
Draw a root in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the ground line.
Step 1: The ground line
Below the middle draw a long straight line from edge to edge for the top of the soil.
Tip We are going to see under the ground, like a cut-away picture.
Step 2: The stem
Start on the ground line in the middle. Draw 2 lines up, wider at the bottom, stopping high up.
Step 3: Two big leaves
Halfway up the stem draw a big fat round leaf pointing left, and another a bit higher pointing right.
Step 4: Veins and bud
Draw a vein from the stem along each leaf, stopping before the tip. Add a tiny teardrop bud on top.
Step 5: The main root
Under the stem draw a long skinny root like a carrot, from the ground line down to a point.
Step 6: Two side roots
From each side of the main root draw a skinny curved root reaching out and down to a point.
Step 7: Two more roots
Lower down draw 2 shorter skinny roots the same way, one down-left and one down-right, spreading like fingers.
Step 8: Root hairs
Start on the edge of each side root and flick 2 tiny root hairs out, one up and one down.
Step 9: Grass and pebbles
Flick up 2 grass blades each side on the ground line. Draw 3 little pebbles in the soil.
Step 10: A worm
Low on the right, under the ground, draw a little wiggly worm: a fat wavy band with a dot eye.
Step 11: Cream roots, pink worm
Go over your lines, then colour the roots cream and the worm pink.
Step 12: Green sprout
Colour the leaves, the bud and the stem green.
Step 13: Grey pebbles, brown soil
Colour the pebbles grey, then the soil brown, around the roots, worm and pebbles. Your root is done!
