How to Draw a Road

Draw a road in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the winding road.

Step 1: The winding road
Start at the bottom, left of the middle. Draw a long S winding up to the middle of the page.
Tip Stop a little above the middle. That is the far end of the road.
Step 2: The other edge
Start at the bottom, right of the middle. Draw a second S that ends beside the first one's tip.
Tip The gap shrinks all the way up, so the road looks far away.
Step 3: The horizon
Start at the left edge. Draw a flat line across to the right edge, touching the tip of the road.
Tip This is where the land meets the sky.
Step 4: Middle dashes
Down the middle of the road draw 3 dashes. Make each one smaller as the road goes away.
Tip Lean each dash the way the road bends.
Step 5: Far hills
Start on the horizon at the left. Draw a round hill, stop on the horizon. Add a bigger one behind.
Step 6: A tree trunk
On the grass at the right, draw a trunk: 2 lines that spread apart at the bottom.
Step 7: Bumpy tree top
On top of the trunk draw a big bumpy cloud of leaves, taller than the horizon.
Tip Rub out the horizon line inside the leaves.
Step 8: The sun
In the top left corner draw a round sun with 8 short rays around it.
Step 9: A cloud
High in the sky draw a puffy cloud: 3 bumps over the top and a flat bottom.
Tip Keep the cloud clear of the sun and the hills.
Step 10: Yellow and blue
Colour the sun and the dashes yellow. Colour the sky light blue, around the cloud.
Step 11: Green grass
Colour the grass light green on both sides of the road, around the tree.
Step 12: Hills and tree
Colour the hills and the tree top dark green. Colour the trunk brown.
Step 13: Grey road
Colour the road dark grey, around the yellow dashes. Your road is ready to drive on!
