How to Draw a Rainbow Prism

Step 1: A glass triangle

A little right of the middle, draw a big triangle with a flat bottom and 3 equal sides.

Tip A glass block this shape is called a prism.

Step 2: A small sun

Far to the left, level with the bottom half of the triangle, draw a small round sun.

Step 3: Sun rays

Draw 7 short rays round the sun. Leave a space on the side that faces the triangle.

Step 4: A beam of light

Start at the sun. Draw 2 lines side by side, sloping gently up. Stop at the triangle's left side.

Tip Sunlight looks white, but it is all the colours mixed together.

Step 5: Through the glass

Start where the beam stops. Draw 2 lines across the triangle, spreading apart. Stop at the right side.

Tip The glass bends the light and spreads it out.

Step 6: The far edge

Near the right edge, start just below the triangle's top. Draw a line straight down. Stop just below its bottom.

Step 7: A fan of light

Start where each line leaves the glass. Draw 2 lines to the far edge: stop at its top and bottom.

Step 8: 7 stripes

Draw 6 more lines inside the fan. Start each on the glass and stop at the far edge, evenly spaced.

Tip The stripes are thin at the glass and wide at the far edge.

Step 9: Yellow

Colour the sun yellow. Count 3 stripes down from the top and colour that stripe yellow too.

Step 10: Light blue glass

Colour the glass triangle light blue, above and below the beam. Leave the beam white all the way.

Step 11: Red and orange

Colour the top stripe red and the stripe under it orange.

Step 12: Green and blue

Colour the stripe under the yellow one green and the next stripe blue.

Step 13: Dark blue and violet

Go over your lines. Colour the next stripe dark blue and the bottom stripe violet.

Tip Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, dark blue, violet: the colours of the rainbow.
