How to Draw a Rain Gauge
Draw a rain gauge in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the tall tube.
Step 1: The tall tube
Start at the top left. Draw a long line down, across the bottom and back up. Stop beside the start.
Tip Keep the 2 long sides straight and the same distance apart.
Step 2: The funnel
On top draw a wide funnel. Start with a wide flat top, then slope both sides in to the tube.
Tip The funnel is wider than the tube, to catch more rain.
Step 3: A happy face
Low in the tube draw 2 big round eyes with black dots. Under them draw a U smile.
Step 4: The water line
Above the eyes, start on the left side. Draw a flat line across and stop on the right side.
Step 5: Rosy cheeks
Beside each end of the smile draw a small oval cheek.
Step 6: Long marks
Above the water draw 4 long marks from the right side inward, evenly spaced.
Tip The marks show how much rain has fallen.
Step 7: Short marks
Between the long marks draw 3 short marks from the right side inward.
Step 8: Stake and ground
Under the tube draw a short post. Draw a ground line across its bottom.
Tip The post is thinner than the tube.
Step 9: Raindrops
Draw 4 raindrops in the air, 2 on each side. Each has a pointed top and a round bottom.
Step 10: Pink cheeks
Colour the cheeks pink.
Step 11: Pale glass
Colour the empty part of the tube very light blue.
Step 12: Yellow and brown
Colour the funnel yellow and the post brown.
Step 13: Blue water
Colour the water and the raindrops blue, around the cheeks. Leave the eyes white. Your rain gauge is filling up!
