How to Draw a Pumpjack
Draw a pumpjack in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the base.
Step 1: The base
Low on your paper draw a long flat block lying on the ground for the base.
Tip A pumpjack nods up and down all day, pumping oil from underground.
Step 2: The post
From the middle of the base draw a tall post, like a thin triangle with the tip cut off.
Step 3: The beam
Across the top of the post draw a long tilted bar, lower on the left, with a round pivot circle.
Step 4: Horse head
On the left end of the beam draw the horse head, a tall backwards D hanging mostly below the beam.
Step 5: Rod and wellhead
From the horse head draw a line down to a small bar, then a rod to a wellhead box.
Step 6: Crank wheel
On the right, near the base, draw a big crank wheel with a small circle inside. Add a motor box.
Step 7: Pitman arm
From the right end of the beam draw a thin arm straight down to the crank wheel.
Step 8: Ground
Draw a ground line under the base and the wellhead, from well left to well right.
Step 9: Grey motor and wellhead
Colour the motor, the wellhead, the rod, its little bar and the pivot grey.
Step 10: Red head and wheel
Colour the horse head red and the crank wheel red.
Step 11: Slate frame
Go over your lines, then colour the base, post, beam and arm slate grey, around the pivot. Nod, nod, nod!
