How to Draw a Circus Ring

Step 1: The head

In the middle of your paper draw an egg for the head, a little narrower at the chin.

Tip Leave room above for a tall hat and a lamp.

Step 2: The face

Below the middle of the head draw 2 round eyes with black dots. Add a wide smile.

Step 3: Top hat

On top of the head draw a flat brim with round ends. Draw a tall hat standing on it.

Step 4: The coat

From just below the chin draw the coat sides down to a hem with a notch. Add 2 buttons.

Tip Start each side a little below the chin, to leave room for the arms.

Step 5: Arms out wide

Start beside the chin. Draw each arm out to the wrist, getting thinner, and back to the coat.

Tip Close each wrist with a short line.

Step 6: Mitten hands

Start at each wrist. Draw an open mitten hand with the thumb up, and stop at the wrist again.

Step 7: Trousers and boots

Start at the hem. Draw 2 short legs with a point between, and stop at the hem. Add 2 boots.

Step 8: The circus ring

Start at the coat. Draw a wide flat oval round the feet and stop at the coat. Add another inside.

Tip The ringmaster stands in the middle of the ring.

Step 9: Stripes

Start on the small oval. Draw 12 short lines across the ring's edge and stop each on the big oval.

Step 10: The spotlight

High above the hat draw a lamp. From it draw 2 long lines down to the ring.

Step 11: Light and sawdust

Colour the beam of light cream. Colour the ring floor and the buttons yellow. Leave the trousers white.

Step 12: Peach skin, pink cheeks

Colour 2 pink cheeks, then the face around them and the hands peach. Leave the eyes white.

Step 13: Red coat, blue stripes

Colour the coat and sleeves red. Colour every other stripe on the ring blue, starting at the front.

Step 14: Black hat and boots

Go over your lines. Colour the top hat, the boots and the lamp black. The show begins!
