Draw a prairie chicken in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

Near the top left, draw a round head, a little wider than tall.

Tip Leave room above the head for 2 tall feathers.

  2. Step 2: Short beak

Draw a short fat beak on the front. For the mouth, start at its tip and stop at the head.

  3. Step 3: Eye and eyebrow

Draw a big round eye with a black dot and a white speck. Add a curved eyebrow on top.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

Start at the back of the head. Draw a long plump body, round the tummy and up to the chin.

Tip Make the body longer than it is tall, like an egg lying down.

  5. Step 5: 2 tall feathers

Behind the top of the head, draw 2 long thin feathers standing up like horns.

Tip These neck feathers stand up when he shows off.

  6. Step 6: Neck balloon

Under the cheek, draw a big round balloon on the neck, tucked behind the head.

Tip He puffs this balloon up to make a booming sound.

  7. Step 7: Short fan tail

On top of the rump, draw a short round fan tail sticking up. Add 2 feather lines inside.

  8. Step 8: Folded wing

On the side, draw a teardrop wing: round at the front, pointed by the tail. Add 2 feather lines.

  9. Step 9: Stripy tummy

Under the wing, draw 4 short curved bars along the tummy.

Tip Keep every bar inside the body.

  10. Step 10: 2 thin legs

Under the tummy, draw 2 thin legs. Give each one 3 slim toes.

Tip Leave a gap between the 2 feet.

  11. Step 11: Ground and grass

Start at the left. Draw a ground line under the toes to the right. Add some grass.

  12. Step 12: Yellow and orange

Colour the eyebrow, legs and toes yellow. Colour the neck balloon orange.

  13. Step 13: Sandy body

Colour the body a soft sand colour, around the wing and the balloon. Colour the beak grey.

  14. Step 14: Brown feathers

Colour the head light brown. Colour the tall feathers, wing and tail dark brown. Leave the eye white.
