How to Draw a Potoo
Draw a potoo in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: flat head, tall body.
Step 1: Flat head, tall body
In the middle draw one tall shape with a wide flat head, narrowing down to a round bottom.
Tip Head and body are one shape, with no neck.
Step 2: Two huge eyes
In the top corners draw 2 huge round eyes, each with a big black dot and a shine.
Step 3: Tiny beak, wide smile
Draw a huge smile from under one eye to under the other. Add a tiny black beak above its middle.
Tip A potoo's beak is tiny but its mouth is huge.
Step 4: Folded wings
Start on each side below the smile. Draw a long wing line curving in and down to the bottom.
Step 5: Chest streaks
Between the wings draw 3 short curved streaks down the chest, not in a straight line.
Step 6: Gripping toes
Under the bottom of the body draw 3 little round toes on each side.
Step 7: Broken stump top
Start left of the toes. Draw a spiky splinter line behind them, stopping right of the toes.
Step 8: Stump sides
From each end of the splinters draw a side down to the ground, flaring out. Add a ground line.
Step 9: Bark lines
Down the front of the stump draw 3 gently curved bark lines.
Step 10: Moon and stars
In the top right draw a crescent moon like a C. Add 2 little 4-point stars in the top left.
Step 11: Yellow eyes and moon
Colour the eyes yellow around the black dots. Colour the moon and stars yellow too.
Step 12: Tan head and chest
Colour the head and chest tan, going around the eyes, beak and wings. Colour the toes grey.
Step 13: Brown wings and stump
Colour the wings brown and the stump dark brown, going around the toes. Your potoo is done!
