How to Draw a Pit House
Draw a pit house in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the pit.
Step 1: The pit
Start at the left edge. Draw a ground line with a wide square dip. Stop at the right edge.
Tip The dip is the pit: the floor of the house, dug down into the ground.
Step 2: Roof top
Start on the ground each side of the pit. Draw a line leaning in, then flat. Stop before the middle.
Tip Leave a gap in the middle. It is the smoke hole, and the way in.
Step 3: Roof underside
Start at each gap edge. Draw a short line down, then copy the roof line underneath, back to the ground.
Tip Keep the 2 lines the same distance apart, so the roof is thick all the way.
Step 4: Two posts
Start on the pit floor. Draw 2 tall posts up to the roof, one on each side.
Tip The posts hold the heavy roof up.
Step 5: The ladder
Start on the floor in the middle. Draw 2 long lines up through the gap and join their tops.
Step 6: Ladder rungs
Draw 6 rungs across the ladder. Start each on the left side and stop on the right side.
Tip Space them evenly. People climbed in and out through the roof.
Step 7: Grass
On the ground line at each side, draw a tuft of 3 short grass blades.
Step 8: Cream inside
Go over your lines. Colour the inside of the house cream, around the posts and between the rungs.
Step 9: Tan earth
Colour the ground tan, from the ground line and the pit down to the bottom of the paper.
Step 10: Wooden posts
Colour the 2 posts wood brown.
Step 11: Brown roof
Colour the 2 roof halves dark brown. Leave the sky white. Your pit house is done!
