How to Draw a Pirate at the Ship’s Wheel

Draw a pirate at the ship’s wheel in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: egg head.

Step 1: Egg head
Near the top, in the middle, draw an egg for the head, narrower at the chin.
Tip Leave the middle for the wheel and the bottom for the deck and sea.
Step 2: The face
Below the middle, draw 2 oval eyes with black dots and shines. Add a U nose and smile.
Step 3: Bandana
Draw a bandana over the head, curving across the forehead. Add a knot and 2 flappy tails on the right.
Step 4: Neck and striped shirt
Draw 2 neck lines. From the left one, draw a short-sleeved shirt round to the right. Rule 4 stripes across.
Step 5: Bent arms and fists
From each sleeve, draw a bent arm out to an elbow, then in to the middle, ending in a fist.
Step 6: Ship's wheel
Between the fists, draw a big wheel and hub. Add 4 spokes through the hub, poking out past the rim.
Step 7: Trousers and boots
From the shirt's bottom left corner, draw 2 trouser legs round to the right. Add a tall boot under each.
Step 8: Deck, hull and sea
Draw waves low down. Rule a deck under the boots. From its ends, draw a pointy hull to the waves.
Step 9: Mast and flag
From the deck on the right, draw a tall pole up to head height. Add a flag at the top.
Step 10: Low rail
Rule a low rail from tip to tip, stopping at his boots and the pole. Add 4 short posts.
Step 11: Peach and tan
Colour the skin peach, leaving the eyes white. Colour the wheel tan, around the fists and the hub.
Step 12: Red and blue
Colour the bandana red. Colour every other shirt band blue, leaving the top band white.
Step 13: Brown and black
Colour the hub, boots, pole, hull and trousers brown, around the wheel. Colour the flag black. Your pirate is done!
