How to Draw a Person Waking Up

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a person waking up in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top, a little left of the middle, draw an egg head, narrower at the chin.

Tip Leave room on both sides for the arms, and half the page below for the bed.

  2. Step 2: A waking face

Draw 2 big shiny eyes and a tiny U nose. Add a big open mouth, like a happy yawn.

  3. Step 3: Bed hair

Start on the left of the head. Draw round tufts over the top, down to the right. Add a hairline.

Tip Soft round bumps, the middle ones tallest.

  4. Step 4: The blanket

Below the head draw a long blanket: a flat top with a bump for the feet, and a wavy bottom.

Tip Leave a gap under the chin for the body. The bed comes later.

  5. Step 5: Neck and pyjama top

Draw 2 neck lines. From them draw a top with sleeves pointing up, its sides stopping on the blanket.

  6. Step 6: Stretching arms

From each sleeve draw an arm out to the elbow, then straight up. Make it thinner at the wrist.

Tip A big morning stretch: elbows out, hands up.

  7. Step 7: Hands

From one side of each wrist draw a round mitten, thumb bump by the head. Stop at the other side.

  8. Step 8: Mattress and pillow

Under the blanket draw a thick mattress, sticking out on the left. Add a puffy pillow on it.

  9. Step 9: Bed posts

At each end of the mattress draw a post with a ball on top. The left post is taller.

  10. Step 10: Board and floor

Under the mattress draw a thin board from the left post to the blanket. Add a floor line underneath.

  11. Step 11: Morning sun

In the top right corner draw a small round sun with 8 short rays.

  12. Step 12: Peach skin, pink cheeks

Colour the cheeks and mouth pink, then the face, neck, arms and hands peach. Leave the eyes white.

  13. Step 13: Yellow and blue

Colour the pyjama top, the sun and the 2 balls yellow. Colour the blanket blue.

  14. Step 14: Brown hair and wood

Colour the hair brown and the posts and board wood brown. Leave the pillow and mattress white. Good morning!
