How to Draw a Penny-Farthing

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a penny-farthing in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: one huge wheel.

Print

  1. Step 1: One huge wheel

Low on the left, draw a huge wheel half the page tall, with a rim circle and a hub dot.

Tip Trace round a saucer. Leave room on the right for a tiny wheel.

  2. Step 2: The road

Under the wheel draw a long flat road line from the left side to the right side.

  3. Step 3: Spokes

In the wheel draw 3 straight lines through the hub, rim to rim, like cutting a pizza into 6.

  4. Step 4: Crank and pedal

From the hub draw a fat stick straight out to the left. End it with a small flat pedal.

  5. Step 5: The other pedal

From the hub draw a second fat stick straight out to the right, ending in another flat pedal.

  6. Step 6: The fork

From the hub draw 2 fat sticks up past the tyre, then join their tops with a fat pill.

Tip The 2 sticks hold the wheel between them.

  7. Step 7: Post and handlebar

From the middle of the pill draw a short thin post up, bending over to the left into a handlebar.

  8. Step 8: The frame

From the back of the pill draw a long stick curving round the big wheel, stopping above the road.

Tip The frame curls round the big wheel like a question mark.

  9. Step 9: Saddle

On the frame behind the handlebar draw a chunky saddle: a pointy front and a round hump at the back.

Tip The saddle sits way up high, like a slice of bread.

  10. Step 10: Little wheel

Round the frame's end draw a tiny wheel on the road, with a rim circle and a hub dot.

  11. Step 11: Little wheel spokes

In the little wheel draw 2 lines through the hub, crossing like a plus sign. Stop at the frame.

  12. Step 12: Grey hubs, red frame

Go over your lines. Colour the 2 hubs light grey, then the fork, pill, post and long frame red.

  13. Step 13: Brown saddle, dark tyres

Colour the saddle brown. Colour the tyres, cranks, pedals and handlebar dark grey, around the red frame.
