How to Draw an Oystercatcher

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw an oystercatcher in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top left draw a big round head, a little wider than tall, with a tiny chin bump.

Tip Leave room on the right and underneath for the body.

  2. Step 2: Long orange bill

From the head draw a long bill to a round tip and back to the head. Add a middle line.

Tip The bill is long and straight, like a carrot.

  3. Step 3: Big eye in a ring

Behind the bill draw a big round eye in a ring. Add a black dot, leaving a white speck.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

From the back of the head curve down to the rump, round a fat tummy, and up under the bill.

Tip The body is a plump egg, narrower than the head.

  5. Step 5: Fan tail

From the rump draw a fan tail pointing down and back, round at the end, back to the tummy.

  6. Step 6: Folded wing

Start under the head. Curve a wing down along the side, and stop on the back near the tail.

  7. Step 7: Front leg and toes

Start under the tummy. Draw a leg bending backwards, 3 round toes, then back up to the tummy.

  8. Step 8: Back leg and toes

A finger further back, start under the tummy and draw the other leg and 3 toes the same way.

  9. Step 9: Beach

Start at the left edge. Draw one long line under the feet across to the right edge. Add 2 pebbles.

  10. Step 10: White tummy, sandy beach

Leave the tummy and the eye white. Colour the beach sand and the 2 pebbles grey.

  11. Step 11: Orange bill, pink legs

Colour the long bill and the eye ring orange. Colour the legs and toes pink.

  12. Step 12: Black head, wing, tail

Colour the head, wing and tail black, around the orange ring. Leave the eye white. Your oystercatcher is done!
