How to Draw an Owl

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top of your paper draw a big egg lying on its side, wider than tall, with fat cheeks.

Tip No corners anywhere: a round dome on top.

  2. Step 2: Two ear tufts

On each top corner of the head draw a fat feather leaning out, with a soft round tip.

  3. Step 3: Two huge eyes

Across the middle of the head draw 2 huge circles, a thumb apart. Colour a big black dot in each.

Tip Owl eyes are enormous: nearly a third of the head wide.

  4. Step 4: The beak

Under the gap between the eyes draw a fat teardrop beak hanging point-down, a finger clear of the eyes.

  5. Step 5: The face mask

Start left of the beak. Draw a big heart up round both eyes, down to the right of the beak.

  6. Step 6: The body

Start under the left cheek. Draw a big C down to the bottom middle. Do the right so they meet.

Tip The body is narrower than the head, fattest near the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Folded wings

Start on each side under the head. Draw a fat leaf wing down to a soft tip near the bottom.

  8. Step 8: Feathery tummy

Between the wings draw 3 little U's side by side, then 2 below in the gaps, like fish scales.

  9. Step 9: The branch

Start near the left edge. Draw a long branch under the tummy, out to a round right end, and back.

  10. Step 10: Gripping feet

Under each eye, start on the tummy and draw a foot with 3 round toes gripping the branch, back up.

  11. Step 11: Yellow and tan

Colour the eyes, beak and feet yellow. Colour the tummy and the face heart around the eyes tan.

  12. Step 12: Brown owl

Colour the wings light brown. Colour the head, tufts and branch brown, around the face heart and beak.
