How to Draw an Onion
Draw an onion in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the onion.
Step 1: The onion
In the middle draw a big round as big as your fist, narrowing at the top into a stubby neck.
Tip Like a ball pulled up into a thumb-sized neck.
Step 2: The tuft
From the top of the neck draw 3 short wispy curves, close together, curling up like a dry tip.
Step 3: Layer lines
Start on each shoulder, where the neck widens. Draw a long bowed line down to the bottom edge.
Tip These 2 curves show the papery layers.
Step 4: The ground
Draw a ground line from far left to far right, just touching the bottom of the onion.
Step 5: Roots
From the bottom of the onion draw 4 short wiggly roots, fanning out over the ground.
Tip Keep them short and thin.
Step 6: A shine
Inside the left side of the onion draw a thin oval sliver for a shine, a finger inside the edge.
Step 7: Papery creases
On the right side, between the edge and the layer line, draw 2 short bowed lines one above the other.
Step 8: A shadow
Under the onion draw a flat oval on the ground line. Rub out the line inside it.
Tip Keep it flat and thin, a bit wider than the onion's bottom.
Step 9: Grey shadow
Go over your lines, then colour the shadow grey.
Step 10: Golden onion
Colour the onion golden brown, leaving the shine white.
