How to Draw an Onigiri

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw an onigiri in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the rice ball.

Print

  1. Step 1: The rice ball

Left of the middle draw a big fat triangle with very round corners, about as wide as it is tall.

Tip An onigiri is a rice ball pressed into a fat triangle.

  2. Step 2: The seaweed

Start on the bottom edge, left of middle. Go up, across right, and down to stop on the bottom edge.

  3. Step 3: A second rice ball

To the right, tucked behind the first, draw a smaller soft triangle. Start and stop where it meets the first.

  4. Step 4: Its seaweed

On the small triangle, start on its bottom edge. Go up, across, and stop back on the bottom edge.

  5. Step 5: Rice grains

Draw 4 little curved dashes, like tiny smiles, on the big rice ball and 2 on the small one.

  6. Step 6: A plate

Draw a big flat oval plate under both rice balls. Its back edge hides behind them.

  7. Step 7: Chopsticks

On the front of the plate draw 2 long chopsticks side by side, slanting down right, thinner at the tips.

  8. Step 8: Sky plate

Go over your lines. Colour the plate sky blue, around the chopsticks. Leave the rice white.

  9. Step 9: Wood chopsticks

    Colour the chopsticks wood brown.

  10. Step 10: Black seaweed

Colour both seaweed strips black. Your onigiri are done!
