How to Draw an Octahedron

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an octahedron in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a tall diamond.

Print

  1. Step 1: A tall diamond

Draw a tall diamond with 4 points: top, bottom, left and right. Make both halves match.

Tip An octahedron is 2 pyramids joined base to base. It has 8 triangle faces.

  2. Step 2: The belt

Start at the left point. Draw a line to a spot below the middle, then stop at the right point.

Tip Put the spot a little to the right, so the left side looks bigger.

  3. Step 3: Two big eyes

Above the belt, left of the middle, draw 2 BIG egg eyes. Add a black dot with a shine.

Tip Keep the face on the left, so there is room for an edge beside it.

  4. Step 4: A big smile

Under the eyes draw a wide U smile from eye to eye, ends turning up.

  5. Step 5: Rosy cheeks

Beside each end of the smile, leaving a small gap, draw a small sideways oval cheek.

  6. Step 6: The front edge

Start at the top point. Draw a line down to the belt's corner, then stop at the bottom point.

Tip Now you can see 4 triangle faces. The other 4 are hidden round the back.

  7. Step 7: Sparkles on the left

On the left of the octahedron draw 2 sparkle stars, one higher and one lower.

  8. Step 8: Sparkles on the right

Draw 2 more sparkle stars on the right to match.

  9. Step 9: Shadow and floor

Draw a flat oval shadow under the bottom point. Add a floor line out from each side of it.

Tip The octahedron balances on its bottom point, like a spinning top.

  10. Step 10: Pink cheeks, yellow face

Colour the cheeks pink. Colour the top left face and the 4 sparkles yellow. Leave the eyes white.

  11. Step 11: Grey shadow

Colour the shadow under the octahedron grey.

  12. Step 12: Two orange faces

Colour the top right face and the bottom left face ginger orange.

Tip Faces that turn away from the light are darker.

  13. Step 13: Dark bottom face

Colour the last face brown so the shape looks solid. Your octahedron is done!
