How to Draw a Mystery Box
Draw a mystery box in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the front.
Step 1: The front
A little below the middle, draw a big square for the front of the box.
Step 2: Two big eyes
On the front, draw 2 big round eyes a gap apart. Add a black dot and white shine in each.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes, draw a wide U smile from eye to eye. Add a small oval cheek beside each end.
Step 4: The top
From the top-left corner, draw a short slant up, a flat line across, and a slant down to the top-right.
Tip The top looks squashed, like a square seen from above.
Step 5: The side
From the far-right corner of the top, draw a line down, then slant in to meet the square's bottom-right corner.
Step 6: The lid band
A finger below the top, draw a flat line across the front. Carry it round the side, slanting up.
Step 7: A question mark
On the side, draw a question mark: a hook over the top, a short line down, and a fat dot.
Step 8: The ground
Draw a long ground line along the bottom of the box, starting well left and stopping well right.
Step 9: Sparkles
Draw 3 small sparkle stars around the box, one on each side and one above.
Step 10: Yellow sparkles
Colour the sparkles yellow. What could be inside your mystery box?
Step 11: Pink lid and cheeks
Colour the top, the lid band and the cheeks pink.
Step 12: Purple box
Colour the front and side purple below the lid band, around the cheeks. Leave the eyes white.

Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a mystery box, drawn by you.
