How to Draw a Motel

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a motel in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: long low block.

Print

  1. Step 1: Long low block

Low down, draw a long low box from a quarter in on the left to near the right edge.

Tip A motel is long and low: 2 floors, and every room opens outside.

  2. Step 2: Roof and walkway

Draw a flat roof box on top and a thicker walkway box across the middle, both poking out the ends.

  3. Step 3: Upstairs doors

On the top floor, draw 3 fat box doors standing on the walkway, evenly spaced.

  4. Step 4: Downstairs doors

Under each one, draw a ground-floor door standing on the bottom line. Give each a tiny round knob.

  5. Step 5: Windows

Just right of the first 2 doors on each floor, draw a square window, 2 up and 2 down.

  6. Step 6: 2 posts

Draw 2 posts from the walkway down to the bottom line, halfway between each downstairs window and the next door.

  7. Step 7: Tall pole

Left of the motel, start at its bottom line and draw a tall pole up, stopping well above the roof.

  8. Step 8: Sign and arrow

Draw a wide sign box on top of the pole, and a fat arrow under it pointing at the motel.

Tip Rub out the pole where it runs through the arrow.

  9. Step 9: MOTEL

Write MOTEL in capital letters across the sign box, with a little space between the letters and inside the box.

  10. Step 10: The ground

Start below the sign's left end and draw the ground line under everything, stopping just past the motel.

  11. Step 11: Tan walls, sky windows

Colour the walls tan, going round the doors, windows and walkway, and colour the windows sky blue.

  12. Step 12: Yellow sign, red doors

Colour the sign box yellow, going round the letters, then all 6 doors and the arrow red.

  13. Step 13: Slate roof and walkway

Colour the roof and walkway slate. Go over your lines, and your motel is done!
