How to Draw Moon Phases
Draw moon phases in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the round moon.
Step 1: The round moon
In the middle of your paper, draw a big round circle for the full moon, as big as a grapefruit.
Step 2: Two big eyes
Just below the middle, draw 2 big eggy eyes close together. Add black dots with white shines.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes, draw a U smile from eye to eye. Add a small oval cheek at each end.
Step 4: Craters
Above the eyes, draw 5 little flat oval craters: 3 up high and 1 a bit lower on each side.
Step 5: Stars
In the sky around the big moon, draw 4 five-point stars: 2 up high and 2 lower down.
Step 6: Sparkles
In the empty sky on each side of the big moon, draw a small sparkle with 4 pointy arms.
Step 7: Five little moons
Under the big moon, draw a row of 5 little circles, all the same size, spread evenly across the page.
Tip A coin is a good size.
Step 8: Shadow lines
On the middle 3 moons, draw top to bottom: a curve bulging right, a straight line, a curve bulging left.
Tip These lines show where the shadow stops on each moon.
Step 9: Cream moons
Colour the big moon cream around the eyes, cheeks and craters, and the bright side of the little moons.
Tip Leave the eyes white, and leave the dark sides of the little moons for later.
Step 10: Yellow stars
Colour the 4 stars and the 2 sparkles yellow.
Step 11: Rosy cheeks
Colour the 2 little cheek ovals rosy pink.
Step 12: Grey craters, slate shadows
Colour the craters grey. Colour the first little moon and the dark left side of the next 3 slate. Done!
