How to Draw a Mermaid on a Rock

Step 1: The head

Draw an egg head near the top, in the middle. Start at the top, go round and end back there.

Tip Leave the lower half of the page for the rock and tail.

Step 2: The face

Below the middle draw 2 round eyes with black dots. Add a tiny nose, a smile and 2 brows.

Step 3: Hair and fringe

Start at brow level on the left. Go over the top, down to the right, then across the forehead.

Step 4: Long hair

Start on the hair by each ear. Go down past the cheek to the shoulder, then back up.

Step 5: Neck and body

Draw 2 neck lines. From the left one, go out, down, across and up, then stop on the right one.

Tip Round the shoulders. Go in at the waist and out at the hips.

Step 6: Shell top

Across the chest, from side to side, draw a bumpy shell line with a smooth line under it.

Step 7: Arms and hands

From each shoulder draw an arm down to a round hand on the rock, and back up to the body.

Tip Bend it a little at the elbow. The arm gets thinner at the wrist.

Step 8: Curling tail and fin

Start at the left hip. Curl a tail down left, then back to the right hip. Add a wide fin.

Step 9: The rock

Start low on the left beside the fin. Draw a big smooth dome behind her, down to the right.

Tip The rock goes behind her hips and hands. Both ends stop level.

Step 10: Scales and water

Draw 3 rows of bumps on the tail. Draw wavy water under the rock, behind the fin.

Step 11: Peach skin, pink cheeks

Colour the face, neck, body, arms and hands peach, with a pink circle on each cheek. Leave the eyes white.

Step 12: Blue water, grey rock

Colour the water light blue. Colour the rock grey like stone, around her hands.

Step 13: Ginger hair

Colour the hair ginger, around the face and behind the neck.

Step 14: Teal tail, purple top

Colour the tail and fin teal and the top purple. Go over your lines.
