How to Draw a Mayflower Ship

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a mayflower ship in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the water.

Print

  1. Step 1: The water

Low on the page, start near the left edge. Draw a long wavy line across to the right edge.

Tip Keep the bumps small and all the same size.

  2. Step 2: The hull

Start on the waves. Draw a curved bow up, a long sagging deck across, a back down to the waves.

Tip The Mayflower carried the Pilgrims across the ocean in 1620.

  3. Step 3: Two castles

Start on the deck. Draw a low front box and a tall stepped back box. Stop on the deck.

  4. Step 4: 3 masts

Draw 3 tall poles: the tallest up from the middle of the deck, a shorter one from each castle.

  5. Step 5: Main sails

On the middle mast draw 2 crossbars. Hang a small square sail from the top one, a big one below.

Tip Sails bulge out at the sides, like they are full of wind.

  6. Step 6: Front sails

On the front mast draw 2 more crossbars and sails the same way, a little smaller.

  7. Step 7: Back sail and pennant

On the back mast draw one crossbar and sail. On top of the middle mast draw a long pointed flag.

  8. Step 8: Bowsprit and stripe

Draw a fat pole poking out of the front castle. Draw 2 long lines along the hull, bow to back.

  9. Step 9: Portholes

Between the 2 long lines draw 3 small round portholes, spread out.

  10. Step 10: Cream sails

    Colour all 5 sails cream.

  11. Step 11: Wooden hull, blue sea

Colour the hull light brown, but not the stripe. Colour the sea blue, down to the bottom of the page.

  12. Step 12: Brown masts and castles

Colour the 2 castles, the masts, the crossbars and the bowsprit dark brown.

  13. Step 13: Red stripe and pennant

Colour the stripe red, around the portholes. Leave the portholes white. Colour the pennant red.
